Ruggiero HistoryFausto Ruggiero, an Italian immigrant, entered the United States at the age of sixteen. He first found employment as a railroad worker in Ohio. A few years later he moved closer to his family in Bangor, Pennsylvania where he continued to work on the railroads. In 1917, Fausto (eventually known to friends and family as "Mamesce") and his wife Mary (Goffredo) decided to sell some general merchandise to make extra income. They set up a store in the front room of their house located at 86 Dante Street in Roseto (next door to the present day site of Ruggiero's Market). This provided an ideal location for the Ruggiero's because it was situated next to the local trolley stop. Popular items sold at the time included animal feed, clothing, and prepackaged goods. Initially, Fausto continued to work for the railroad and Mary stayed home and tended to the store. This was quite opportune for Mary because she could raise her children while working at home. After a few years, Ruggiero's Market's popularity began to take off. One main reason was Mary's kind, honest approach to her customers. In 1925 a new building was built at 88 Dante Street, right next to their home (it remains the site of the present day store). Fausto quit his job on the railroads to work full time at the store. He dealt with his customers the same way his wife did; in a kind, honest manner. Fausto spent long, hard hours at the store to make it successful. As Fausto and Mary's family grew, their daughter and three sons spent time helping their parents in the store. During the war years the boys, Louis, Michael, and Joseph, entered various branches of the service while Anna attended the University of Pennsylvania. When the war finally ended, the boys pursued various careers. Their youngest son, Joseph, elected to continue helping his parents at the store. In the early 60's Joseph took over full ownership of the store. Joseph's presence brought new ideas to the store. He participated in classes that earned him a butchering certificate. This allowed the store to offer it's customers a selection of choice cuts of beef and veal, and also various deli meats. With this new element the store's clientele steadily increased. Joe mirrored his parents approach to the business in many ways. As he raised his children, he had them assist him in the store. He taught his children to have respect for the customers of Ruggiero's Market. He prides himself on maintaining a personal relationship with these customers. And, he continued to offer quality meats and merchandise to the community. In January of 2003, Joseph retired and handed the store over to his youngest son David. Joseph still remains an active figure at Ruggiero's Market. He helps to support his son in business related matters. As with his grandfather and father before him, David continues to offer the community quality meats and merchandise. Through David's hard work and dedication Ruggiero's Market remains a staple in the community. It is his goal to maintain Ruggiero's Market as the family business that has made it successful in years past. With the addition of online services, customers across the globe can enjoy the quality merchandise and services that Ruggiero’s Market has to offer. Ruggiero’s Market continues to move forward because of David’s entrepreneurial ideas.
